Watch this excerpt from Pastor John Munro's remarks during our Sunday morning worship service, and read his full statement below:
How do we respond to the events this week in Charlotte?
We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Keith Scott; police officer Brentley Vinson; and Justin Carr (who was shot during the protests). We live in a violent world where injustice, crime, and evil flourish and our city is not an exception. But this is the city to which God has called us, to shine with the beauty of Jesus Christ.
We need to pray. This is not a cliche. This is not something we just say we are going to do. We do need to pray. Pray! Pray! Pray! As your pastor, I invite you to come to the Chapel for a prayer gathering.
Love and respect all people, particularly those different from you. Everyone is made in the image of God. Speak to others respectfully about these tragedies. Don't make generalizations about African-Americans or Caucasians or Hispanics or the police or those in leadership in our city, state, and nation. The vast majority of all of these are people of goodwill. Even in our disagreement with each other let's learn to speak respectfully. Scripture is very clear on this.
Don't speculate or make a rush to judgment based on your feelings or on partial and possibly biased information. We are a nation of laws. Allow the investigation to proceed. God has appointed those in authority to take the initiative on these matters. All of us would like all the information now, but it takes time. We don't believe in trial by media. Leave vengeance to the Lord. See Romans 12:14-13:1.
Try to understand the pain, frustration, anger, and perspective of others. We all have our own perspectives. I am thankful we are a very diverse congregation at Calvary, and because of that diversity we look at things differently. Each of us has our own lens. Speak to those who may see things differently from you. This is good and healthy. You may not agree with them or understand them but as followers of Jesus, we are commanded to love all people and to live at peace with them.
In your sphere of influence promote peace, justice, and love. Display and proclaim Jesus. This is our calling as authentic followers of Jesus Christ. The world is weary of our words. As followers of Jesus we have a message, a message we are commanded to proclaim, but we are also commanded to display Christ. As you go to work and into the community, and interact with your friends and family, display and proclaim the Lord Jesus Christ.
